Agafay sunset times for every month, plus when to leave Marrakech, when the light is best for photos, and how dinner shows are timed.

Arrive ten minutes late and you'll miss the best show in Morocco. Here's exactly when the sun sets over Agafay, every month of the year.

Everything in Agafay is timed around the sunset. The camel rides, the quad tours, the dinners, the fire shows — they all revolve around those thirty minutes when the stone hills turn gold and the Atlas Mountains glow pink behind them. This guide gives you the sunset time for every month, and — just as important — what time to leave Marrakech so you don't miss it.

The sunset times, month by month

These are approximate times for the Agafay area, which follows Marrakech's clock [TO CHECK: exact sunset times per month]:

- **January:** around 18:30 - **February:** around 18:55 - **March:** around 19:20 - **April:** around 19:40 - **May:** around 20:05 - **June:** around 20:45 (latest of the year) - **July:** around 20:40 - **August:** around 20:15 - **September:** around 19:40 - **October:** around 19:00 - **November:** around 18:25 - **December:** around 18:15 (earliest of the year)

One Moroccan quirk to know: the country changes its clock for Ramadan, switching back an hour and then forward again [TO CHECK: current clock-change practice]. Your phone handles this automatically, but double-check printed times during Ramadan weeks.

The golden hour comes first

The sunset itself is the finale, but the best light starts 45 to 60 minutes earlier. This is when the pale hills turn honey-coloured, shadows stretch long across the desert, and every photo looks professional. If you are doing a camel ride or quad tour, this is the window you want — not the last light, but the hour before it.

After the sun drops, you get 20 to 30 minutes of "blue hour": the sky goes deep blue, the camps light their lanterns and fires, and the first stars appear. Dinner shows are timed to start as the blue hour ends.

What time to leave Marrakech

Agafay is about 40 km from Marrakech, roughly 45 minutes by road — but allow a full hour with city traffic at the start. Our rule of thumb:

- **Sunset camel ride or quad tour:** leave Marrakech 2 to 2.5 hours before sunset. That gets you to the camp with time for tea, a scarf-tying lesson and a relaxed start. - **Dinner and show only:** leave 1.5 hours before sunset. You will arrive for the golden hour, watch the sun go down with a drink, and sit down to dinner as the stars come out. - **Overnight stay:** leave whenever you like, but arriving by golden hour is still the best plan — sunset from your camp is the highlight of the night.

In December that means leaving around 15:45–16:30; in June, around 18:15–19:00. Our drivers plan this for you — pickup times on our sunset tours are set against the actual sunset for your date.

Which months have the best sunsets?

Honest answer: the sun sets beautifully all year, but the character changes.

**Winter (December–February):** the earliest sunsets and often the clearest air. The Atlas behind the desert is covered in snow, which turns the mountains pink and orange at dusk — the most dramatic backdrop of the year. Bring warm layers; desert nights drop to 0–3°C.

**Spring (March–May):** soft light, comfortable temperatures, and after wet winters the desert can carry a faint green tinge. Lovely and uncrowded.

**Summer (June–August):** the latest sunsets, around 20:45, and the warmest evenings — you can sit out in a T-shirt at midnight. The heat of the day has passed by golden hour, which is exactly why summer sunset trips work so well.

**Autumn (September–November):** reliable clear skies and gentle temperatures. A safe, beautiful choice.

Planning your evening

A well-timed Agafay evening runs like this: pickup from your hotel or riad, arrive in the desert for the golden hour, camel ride or quad tour as the light turns, watch the sunset from a viewpoint with mint tea, then dinner under the stars with music and a fire show, and back in Marrakech 3 to 4 hours after sunset [TO CHECK: typical return times]. See the options at the bottom of this page and in our [Agafay Desert guide](/blog/agafay-desert-guide).

What if it's cloudy?

Honest answer: some evenings are cloudy, and a few each year are properly overcast. The good news is that broken cloud often makes the best sunsets of all — the light catches the underside of the clouds and the whole sky turns orange. A completely grey evening is rare, and even then the desert, the dinner and the fire show carry the night. We watch the forecast and will always tell you honestly what to expect; if heavy weather is forecast, we can usually move your trip to another evening.

Sunset and Ramadan

During Ramadan, sunset takes on an extra meaning: it is the moment of iftar, the breaking of the fast. Being in the desert at that moment, with dates and milk and the call to prayer drifting from a distant village, is a genuinely special experience. Do note that Morocco shifts its clock back an hour for Ramadan, so sunset clock-times jump by an hour during those weeks — check the time for your exact date rather than trusting a printed table.

A final timing tip

Whatever the month, be at your viewpoint ten minutes before the listed sunset, camera ready, tea in hand. The sun drops fast near the horizon, and the difference between "we made it" and "we missed it" is often one slow camel. Our drivers and guides time the whole evening backwards from the sunset on your date — it is the single most important number in Agafay. One last note: these times shift by a minute or two each day, so treat them as a guide, not a guarantee. Your phone's weather app shows the exact sunset for your date — check it that morning, and then let us handle the rest.

However you time it, do time it. Of all the evenings Marrakech offers, the ones our guests talk about longest almost always end with the sun going down over these hills.
