Agafay with kids: camel rides, quads, pools and dinner under the stars. Honest family advice, ages and safety tips from local guides.
Camels, quad bikes, a pool in the desert and dinner under the stars: Agafay might be the easiest family adventure in Morocco.
By Amazouz Morocco Tours team, local guides based in Marrakech and the High Atlas
We take families to Agafay every week, and it never fails. The desert is close (about 40 km, 45 minutes from Marrakech), the activities suit every age, and there is something about camels, fire and stars that makes children put their phones down and just stare. Here is our honest family guide — what works at what age, and how to plan the day.
Why Agafay works so well for families
The short drive is the first gift: no four-hour journeys, no "are we there yet". The second is variety — if a child gets bored of one thing, another is minutes away. And the third is that everything happens outdoors, at child pace, with space to run around between activities. Compared with a medina day (crowds, scooters, getting lost), Agafay is the relaxing option for parents.
The activities, age by age
**Camel rides — from about age 3.** Small children ride with a parent on the same camel; children from about 6–7 can usually ride their own, led by the handler [TO CHECK: minimum ages at partner operators]. The first lurch when the camel stands up makes everyone scream-laugh — it is the moment of the day. Rides last from 30 minutes to an hour; for young children, shorter is better.
**Quad biking — older children as passengers.** Children can ride as passengers with an adult driver, typically from about 6–8 years old; driving your own quad usually requires being 16+ [TO CHECK: exact age rules at partner operators]. Teenagers love it. Beginners are welcome — the guides give a full briefing and the pace is gentle until everyone is confident.
**Buggy rides — the family vehicle.** Buggies seat two to four, so parents can drive with children beside them. A good option when children are too young for quads but too old to sit still on a camel.
**Pool days — all ages.** Several Agafay camps and day venues have pools with desert views, some with shallow ends suitable for children [TO CHECK: which partner venues have child-friendly pools]. In the hot months, a pool day with lunch is the easiest family outing near Marrakech.
**Dinner and show — all ages.** Fire performers, drummers and gnawa musicians keep children wide-eyed through dinner. One honest note: dinner trips return late (around 22:00–23:00), which suits older children better than toddlers.
Day trip or overnight?
**With children under 5:** choose a sunset-and-dinner trip or a pool day. You get the magic without the disrupted night, and you are back at your riad for a familiar bedtime — or at least close to it.
**With children 5 and over:** an overnight in a desert camp is the adventure they will talk about for years. Family tents sleep three to four, the night sky is extraordinary, and waking up in the desert is something no hotel can match. In winter, pack warm pyjamas — desert nights drop to 0–3°C, though tents have plenty of blankets.
Practical tips from guides with families
- **Sun protection is non-negotiable.** Hats, sunscreen and sunglasses for every child, in every season. The desert sun is strong even in winter.
- **Layers.** Hot days, cool evenings, cold winter nights. Bring a fleece or jacket per child whatever the forecast says.
- **Closed shoes.** The ground is rocky and sometimes thorny. Trainers, not sandals, for anyone walking around.
- **Snacks and water.** Bring favourites from Marrakech. Camps provide meals, but a hungry 7-year-old at 17:00 needs a biscuit, not a tagine schedule.
- **Toilets.** Camps have proper toilets, but they can be a walk from the activities. Take children before the camel ride, not during.
- **Motion sickness.** The road is short but winding in places. Front seats and no screens for the last 20 minutes help.
Animal welfare: an honest word
Children ask the best questions, and "are the camels happy?" is one we take seriously. We work with operators whose animals are well fed, rested and rotated, and we are happy to answer questions about how the camels are kept. If your family prefers to skip animal rides, the quads, buggies, pools and dinner shows make a full day without them.
A sample family afternoon
Pickup from your riad around 15:30 (earlier in winter, timed to the sunset). Arrive in Agafay for the golden hour, camel ride as the light turns golden, mint tea and scarf-tying for the children, sunset from the viewpoint, then dinner with the fire show as the stars come out. Back at your riad around 22:30 with children asleep in the car — the sign of a successful day.
See family-friendly options at the bottom of this page and in our [Agafay Desert guide](/blog/agafay-desert-guide). Tell us your children's ages when you book and we will shape the day around them.
Safety in the desert
Agafay is a gentle, supervised environment, but a few honest notes. The ground is rocky and uneven, so closed shoes matter more than anything else. Quad and buggy operators provide helmets — insist children wear them, properly fastened. Camel rides are calm and led, but hold young children securely during the stand-up and sit-down moments, which are the only wobbly parts. Around the fire show and the campfire, keep little ones at a sensible distance. And the desert sun is strong all year: reapply sunscreen after pool time and before the golden-hour activities.
What a family trip costs
Prices depend on the mix you choose — a pool day, a sunset camel ride with dinner, or an overnight in a family tent. The prices on our tours below are verified and current, and child prices apply on our tours. As a rough guide, a family sunset-and-dinner evening costs less than a mid-range restaurant dinner for four in many European cities [TO CHECK: keep or cut this comparison]. Tell us your children's ages when you book and we will recommend the option that fits your family and your budget honestly.
