The best month for a hot air balloon flight in Marrakech: season-by-season comparison of weather, views, cancellation risk and take-off times.
The balloons fly almost all year, but some months give you snow-capped mountains, calm air and unforgettable light.

"Which month is best?" is a question with two different answers, because the most beautiful month and the most reliable month are not the same. Here is the honest season-by-season picture, so you can choose with your eyes open — and plan so that a cancelled morning never ruins the plan.
Winter (December–February): the most beautiful
This is our favourite season for the view. The Atlas Mountains are covered in snow, the air is washed clear, and on a crisp morning the whole range glows pink as the sun rises. The palm groves and villages below look sharp and close. Photographers love winter flights, and so do we.
The trade-offs: it is cold before sunrise (dress properly — see our what-to-wear guide), and winter is one of the windier seasons, so cancellation risk is at its highest [TO CHECK: cancellation rates by month]. Take-off is at a civilised hour, though — the late sunrise means you are not up at 4 a.m.
Spring (March–May): the all-rounder
Spring balances everything: mild mornings, green fields and wildflowers below, the Atlas still carrying snow early in the season, and improving flying reliability as the season goes on. March can still be windy; by April and May, conditions are often lovely. If you want one answer to "when should I fly?", late spring is a very good one.
Summer (June–August): the most reliable
Summer's secret is stability. The settled weather means the fewest weather cancellations of the year — if your flight matters more than anything, summer is your season. The mornings start early (take-off can be around 5:30–6:00 [TO CHECK: summer take-off times]) because the sunrise is early and the air must be cool and calm. The views are hazier than winter — the Atlas can be a pale silhouette — but the dawn light over the palm groves is gorgeous, and you are back at your riad before the heat of the day.
Autumn (September–November): the underrated choice
Clear skies return after the summer haze, mornings are mild, and the light turns golden. Early autumn is reliable; late autumn sees the wind pick up towards winter. A safe, beautiful, uncrowded choice — and the tourist crowds are thinner than in spring.
The month-by-month honest table [TO CHECK: verify characterisations]
- **January:** stunning snow views; coldest mornings; moderate cancellation risk
- **February:** like January, slightly longer days
- **March:** beautiful, green, but one of the windier months
- **April:** excellent all-round; green fields, mild air
- **May:** warm, reliable, lovely light
- **June:** very reliable; early take-off; hazy mountains
- **July:** the most reliable month; earliest take-off; hazy views
- **August:** like July
- **September:** clearing skies, mild, reliable — underrated
- **October:** golden light, good reliability
- **November:** cooler, first snow on the peaks, wind increasing
- **December:** magical mountain views; cold; higher cancellation risk
The rule that matters more than the month
Whatever month you choose: **book the balloon for the first morning of your stay.** If the weather cancels — and any month can cancel — every remaining morning is a backup, and we reschedule you free of charge. Guests who book the last morning have no fallback. This one decision matters more than which month you pick.
So, our verdict
- **For the most beautiful flight:** December to February, accepting a higher chance of rescheduling.
- **For the best balance:** April, May, September, October.
- **For the highest chance of flying on your one available morning:** June to August.
Flights start at €150 per adult (€135 per child), Comfort at €180 — see the options below. For a detailed look at what the sunrise morning itself feels like, our sister site has a full guide at toubkalviews.com.
What about the light, for photographers?
If photos matter to you, the seasons differ beyond the mountain views. Winter's clear air gives the sharpest, longest visibility — you can often see the full Atlas ridge in detail. Spring brings green fields and the softest, warmest dawn light of the year. Summer's haze softens everything into pastel layers, which some photographers love and others find flat. Autumn's golden light on the palm groves is the most "Moroccan" looking of all.
Whichever season you choose, the first twenty minutes after take-off — low sun, long shadows — are the finest of the flight. Have your camera ready from the moment the basket leaves the ground.
One more honest consideration: crowds and atmosphere
The balloon season follows the tourist season. In the busiest months — roughly March to May and the Christmas and New Year period — more balloons fill the sky, which is a spectacle in itself, and flights sell out further ahead. In the quieter summer and late-autumn weeks there are fewer balloons and often more space in each basket. If you are travelling in peak season, book your flight as soon as your dates are fixed; if you are travelling in the quiet months, you can often decide later and still get your preferred morning.
