A practical guide to the High Atlas near Marrakech — Berber villages, valley day trips, guided hikes around Imlil and the climb to Toubkal.
The High Atlas rise directly behind Marrakech, and on a clear day you can see their peaks from the city. Within an hour or two you can be walking between Amazigh (Berber) villages, terraced fields and walnut trees, or setting off from Imlil towards Jebel Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa at 4,167 m. This guide covers the main ways to visit: relaxed village day trips, guided hikes, and multi-day treks.
What to expect
• Valley and village day trips: a driver and guide take you into the mountains with stops at viewpoints, a Berber house for mint tea, often an argan cooperative, and lunch in a village. Walking is light.
• Guided day hikes: typically a few hours of walking on mule paths between villages around Imlil or neighbouring valleys, with lunch in a local house. You need reasonable fitness and good shoes.
• Toubkal treks: usually two days or more. Most climbers start in Imlil, walk up to the refuge on day one and reach the summit early on day two.
Imlil sits at about 1,800 m at the end of the tarmac road and is the natural base for hiring mountain guides and mules; most visitors there are heading for Toubkal. The original communities still live in the surrounding valleys around villages such as Aroumd (Ait Souka) and Tacheddirt.
Best time to visit
Marrakech has a hot semi-arid climate. Average daytime highs are about 18–22 °C from November to March, 24–27 °C in April and May, and 36 °C in July and August, with almost no rain from June to September. Most rain falls between October and April, on about five or six days a month. UV levels reach 10–11 from May to August. The mountains are cooler than the city, which is why both visitors and Moroccans come here to escape the summer heat of the plain. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for hiking. In winter, snow is common on high ground and Toubkal becomes a winter climb (roughly December to April) that needs crampons, an ice axe, waterproof winter boots, warm layers, gloves and a hat — most of which can be rented in Imlil. Valley day trips run all year, but mountain roads can be affected by weather.
How to get there
Imlil is connected by road to Asni; shared taxis and minibuses run between them. Asni holds a weekly Saturday market. From Marrakech the drive to Imlil takes about 1h15–1h30 (around 65 km). Most tours include a return transfer from Marrakech, which is the simplest option. If you are climbing Toubkal, a licensed mountain guide is mandatory for foreign hikers (a rule in place since 2019).
Day trip or trek?
If you have one day and want an easy taste of mountain life, choose a valley or village day trip. If you enjoy walking, a guided day hike around Imlil gives you more time on foot and quieter paths. Toubkal is for fit walkers who can spend at least two days and are comfortable at altitude.
Who it suits
Village day trips suit almost everyone, including families and travellers who want scenery without much walking. Guided day hikes suit people who are comfortable walking for several hours on uneven paths. Toubkal treks suit fit walkers with time for at least two days who are prepared for altitude, cold nights and an early summit start. If you have limited mobility, tell us when you book: some villages involve steps and steep paths, and we can suggest a trip with more time in the vehicle and at viewpoints.
Choosing the right tour
Of the 439 Atlas Mountains experiences in our catalogue, 26 are described as private and the rest are shared or small-group formats. 103 are multi-day or overnight programmes, 109 mention lunch and 14 mention dinner in their title or duration. 356 can be booked and paid online straight away; the others start with a request and an exact quote. A shared tour is the most economical way to go and a good way to meet other travellers; a private tour costs more but lets you set the pace, stop where you like and travel only with your own group. Whichever you choose, compare three things on the tour page before booking: what is included (transfers, meals, activities, entry fees), the total duration including the drive, and the cancellation terms. If two tours look alike, the one with more ratings on booking partner platforms has simply been taken by more travellers — it is not a ranking of quality by us.
Prices
Our catalogue currently lists 439 experiences for the Atlas Mountains. Listed starting prices run from €6.23 to €2200.00, and half of them start below €44.58. Group village day trips with lunch are the cheapest; private hikes and multi-day Toubkal treks with guides, mules and meals cost more. Every price on our site is shown in euros and is calculated on our server; the total you see before paying — for your date, option and number of adults and children — is the amount PayPal charges. Children pay 90% of the adult price on per-person tours unless the tour states otherwise.

Practical tips
• Wear proper walking shoes; mountain paths are stony and steep in places.
• Layers matter: it can be warm in the valley and cold higher up, especially in the morning.
• Bring sun protection and water.
• Dress modestly in the villages and ask before photographing people.
• For treks, read the inclusions carefully: guide, mule, meals and refuge nights differ by tour.

How booking works with Amazouz Morocco Tours
Choose a tour, pick your date and tell us how many adults and children are travelling, with each child's age.
