How to spend a day in Essaouira: the fortified medina, the fishing port, the beach, the drive from Marrakech and what tours include.
Essaouira — called Mogador in the past — is a walled port on the Atlantic coast and a complete change of pace from Marrakech. Its medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site, described as an exceptional example of a late-18th-century fortified town built on European military principles in a North African setting. Expect sea air, ramparts, blue fishing boats, art galleries and grilled fish by the port.
What to expect
Most Essaouira day trips include:
• An early departure from Marrakech and a drive of about 2h30–3h each way.
• A stop on the way at an argan oil cooperative, and often at the argan trees where goats are sometimes seen — to be honest, the goats are often placed in the trees by local farmers for photos and tips.
• Free time or a guided walk in the medina, the ramparts and the port.
• Time for lunch — the fish stalls near the port are popular — and for the beach.
Some tours add optional activities such as camel or quad rides on the coast; these are listed on each tour page.
Best time to visit
Essaouira is on the ocean, so it is usually cooler and windier than Marrakech, thanks to the Atlantic trade winds. The wind also makes it a well-known kitesurfing and windsurfing spot. That makes it a welcome escape in summer, when Marrakech averages 36 °C. Bring a jacket at any time of year; the wind is part of the town's character and attracts windsurfers and kitesurfers.
How to get there
Essaouira is about 180–190 km west of Marrakech. CTM (ctm.ma) and Supratours (supratours.ma) run several coaches a day, taking about 3 hours — check their websites for current times — but a day trip with a return transfer saves time and includes stops on the way. Our tours list their pickup arrangements on each tour page.
Day trip or overnight?
A day trip gives you around five to six hours in town, which is enough for the medina, port and a lunch. If you love slow travel, consider spending a night and booking a one-way transfer; ask us on WhatsApp for options.
Who it suits
Essaouira suits travellers who want a break from the bustle of Marrakech, lovers of seafood and art, photographers, and anyone curious about Morocco's coastal history. It is a relaxed day with lots of walking on flat, cobbled streets, so it works well for most ages. It is less suited to travellers who want a beach holiday with calm, warm water — the Atlantic here is often windy — or who dislike long drives.
A sample day
Timings vary by tour and are confirmed with your booking; a typical day runs from pickup around 8:00 to a return around 18:00–19:00. Pickup in Marrakech in the early morning and a drive west across the plains, usually with a stop at an argan cooperative to see how the oil is made by hand. Arrival in Essaouira in the late morning: a walk along the ramparts (the Skala), through the medina's white-and-blue lanes and down to the fishing port, where the day's catch is sold and grilled. Free time after lunch for the beach, the galleries or a coffee on the main square. Departure in the late afternoon and arrival back in Marrakech in the evening.
What makes Essaouira different
UNESCO describes Essaouira as a major international trading seaport since its foundation, linking Morocco and its Saharan hinterland with Europe and the rest of the world. That history still shows in the town's layout: straight streets and ramparts laid out on European military principles, surrounding a medina that feels very different from the winding lanes of Marrakech. It is a calmer place to shop for crafts, and many visitors find it easier to wander without a guide.
Choosing the right tour
Of the 68 Essaouira experiences in our catalogue, 7 are described as private and the rest are shared or small-group formats. 2 are multi-day or overnight programmes, 2 mention lunch and 1 mention dinner in their title or duration. 58 can be booked and paid online straight away; the others start with a request and an exact quote. A shared tour is the most economical way to go and a good way to meet other travellers; a private tour costs more but lets you set the pace, stop where you like and travel only with your own group. Whichever you choose, compare three things on the tour page before booking: what is included (transfers, meals, activities, entry fees), the total duration including the drive, and the cancellation terms. If two tours look alike, the one with more ratings on booking partner platforms has simply been taken by more travellers — it is not a ranking of quality by us.
Prices
Our catalogue currently lists 68 experiences for Essaouira. Listed starting prices run from €8.29 to €209.00, and half of them start below €21.77. Small-group day trips are typically the most affordable; private trips and added activities cost more. Every price on our site is shown in euros and is calculated on our server; the total you see before paying — for your date, option and number of adults and children — is the amount PayPal charges. Children pay 90% of the adult price on per-person tours unless the tour states otherwise.

How booking works with Amazouz Morocco Tours
Choose a tour, pick your date and tell us how many adults and children are travelling, with each child's age. Tours with instant booking show the full euro total and can be paid straight away by PayPal or card. Other tours start as a request: we confirm availability and send an exact euro quote, and you pay on your private booking page. Your booking is confirmed only after the payment has been verified — a WhatsApp chat or an enquiry does not confirm a booking on its own.
