A short guide to the palm grove and the rocky Jbilets hills north of Marrakech — the closest places for a quad, camel or balloon experience.

The Palmeraie, Marrakech's palm grove, and the stony Jbilets hills beyond it are the closest places to the city for a quad bike, buggy or camel ride. They are also where many hot-air balloon flights take place at sunrise. Because the drive is short, these experiences fit into a morning or afternoon, leaving the rest of your day free for the medina.

What to expect

• Quad and buggy rides: a short transfer to a base on the edge of the city, a briefing, then one to two hours on tracks through palm groves and into the dry Jbilets hills. Many tours stop at a Berber house for mint tea. • Camel rides: a calm ride among the palm trees, often at sunset; good for families. • Balloon flights: an early-morning pickup, a flight at sunrise over the countryside near Marrakech, and usually a breakfast afterwards; many tours include a flight certificate. • Combined experiences: quad plus camel, or a quad ride with a pool afternoon.

Palmeraie or Agafay?

The Palmeraie and Jbilets are closer and greener, ideal when time is short. Agafay feels more like open desert, with wider views and evening dinner shows. Both are a world away from the dunes of Merzouga.

Best time to visit

Marrakech has a hot semi-arid climate. Average daytime highs are about 18–22 °C from November to March, 24–27 °C in April and May, and 36 °C in July and August, with almost no rain from June to September. Most rain falls between October and April, on about five or six days a month. UV levels reach 10–11 from May to August. Early mornings and late afternoons are the most comfortable times for quad and camel rides, especially from May to September. Balloon flights depend on calm weather and can be rescheduled at short notice; if a flight is cancelled because of weather, it is rescheduled free of charge.

How to get there

The Palmeraie lies on the northern edge of Marrakech and is about 15–20 minutes by road from the Medina; the Jbilets hills are about 30 minutes away. Most tours include a return transfer, which is the easiest option.

Who it suits

The Palmeraie suits travellers with limited time who want an active half day, families with children (camel rides are gentle), and first-time quad riders who prefer a short ride close to the city. Balloon flights suit early risers and anyone celebrating a special occasion. If you want a full desert landscape and an evening dinner show, Agafay is the better choice.

A sample half day

Timings vary by tour. For a quad or camel ride, the driver collects you in the morning or afternoon and drives you to the base at the edge of the city. After a short safety briefing and a scarf for the dust, you ride for one to two hours through the palm grove and out into the bare hills of the Jbilets, stopping for photos and mint tea in a Berber house. You are back in Marrakech in time for lunch or dinner. For balloon flights, pickup is before dawn, the flight takes place at sunrise, and breakfast follows on the ground before the drive back in the mid-morning.

Good to know before you ride

You don't need any experience to drive a quad on these tours: the guide sets the pace and the tracks are wide. Age rules differ between tours, and children usually ride as passengers. Tell us when you book if anyone in your group has back problems or is pregnant, and we'll suggest a camel ride instead.

Choosing the right tour

Of the 23 Palmeraie and Jbilets experiences in our catalogue, 0 are described as private and the rest are shared or small-group formats. 0 are multi-day or overnight programmes, 0 mention lunch and 0 mention dinner in their title or duration. 15 can be booked and paid online straight away; the others start with a request and an exact quote. A shared tour is the most economical way to go and a good way to meet other travellers; a private tour costs more but lets you set the pace, stop where you like and travel only with your own group. Whichever you choose, compare three things on the tour page before booking: what is included (transfers, meals, activities, entry fees), the total duration including the drive, and the cancellation terms. If two tours look alike, the one with more ratings on booking partner platforms has simply been taken by more travellers — it is not a ranking of quality by us.

Prices

Our catalogue currently lists 23 experiences for the Palmeraie and Jbilets. Listed starting prices run from €12.02 to €259.20, and half of them start below €28.51. Short quad and camel rides are the most affordable; buggies for two, private rides and balloon flights cost more. Every price on our site is shown in euros and is calculated on our server; the total you see before paying — for your date, option and number of adults and children — is the amount PayPal charges. Children pay 90% of the adult price on per-person tours unless the tour states otherwise.

How booking works with Amazouz Morocco Tours

Choose a tour, pick your date and tell us how many adults and children are travelling, with each child's age. Tours with instant booking show the full euro total and can be paid straight away by PayPal or card. Other tours start as a request: we confirm availability and send an exact euro quote, and you pay on your private booking page.
