A practical guide to Marrakech: what to see in the medina, the best season, getting around, typical tour prices and honest tips.

Marrakech is Morocco's fourth-largest city and one of its four imperial cities, founded around 1070 as the capital of the Almoravid dynasty. Its red walls, built in 1122–1123, gave it the nickname 'the Red City'. The medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the city sits west of the foothills of the High Atlas, which makes it the perfect base for both city sightseeing and day trips to the mountains and the desert.

What to expect

• The medina: a maze of souks, workshops and riads around Jemaa el-Fnaa square, best explored with a guide on your first day. • Palaces and monuments: the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, El Badi Palace and the Koutoubia Mosque. • Gardens: the Majorelle Garden and the Menara Gardens, with views to the Atlas. • Experiences: cooking classes, hammams and spas, food tours, and balloon flights at sunrise. • Day trips: the Atlas Mountains, Ourika, Ouzoud, Agafay and Essaouira are all reachable in a day — see our destination guides.

Best time to visit

Marrakech has a hot semi-arid climate. Average daytime highs are about 18–22 °C from November to March, 24–27 °C in April and May, and 36 °C in July and August, with almost no rain from June to September. Most rain falls between October and April, on about five or six days a month. UV levels reach 10–11 from May to August. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for sightseeing. In summer, plan indoor or shaded visits for the middle of the day and explore in the morning and evening. Winter is mild and sunny by day but cool at night, especially in riads without heating.

How to get around

The medina is best explored on foot; cars cannot reach most lanes. Petit taxis serve the city and carry up to 3 passengers. They have meters, but many drivers don't use them and fares are higher at night, so agree the price before you get in. For trips out of the city, a tour with a return transfer is the simplest option; many of our tours collect you from your accommodation or the nearest point a vehicle can reach. Marrakech is at 466 m altitude and uses Morocco's time zone: UTC+1 all year, except during Ramadan, when the clocks switch to UTC+0. Check the local time when you book activities around Ramadan.

How many days?

Three days let you see the medina and the main monuments and take one day trip. With five days or more you can add the Atlas, a desert evening in Agafay or a coastal day in Essaouira — or set off on a 3-day Sahara tour.

Who it suits

Marrakech suits almost every kind of traveller: culture and history lovers, food lovers, shoppers, families and couples. First-time visitors often find the medina intense — busy lanes, scooters and persistent sellers — so a guided walk on the first day and a calm riad to return to make a big difference. Travellers who prefer nature and quiet can base themselves in the city and spend most days on trips to the mountains, the desert or the coast.

A suggested first day

Start early at the Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs before the crowds, then walk through the mellah and the souks towards Jemaa el-Fnaa. After lunch, take a taxi to the Majorelle Garden (book tickets in advance at busy times) and rest in a café in Gueliz. Return to Jemaa el-Fnaa at sunset, when food stalls and performers fill the square. Many of our city tours combine these sights with a local guide so you can find your way and understand what you see.

Choosing the right tour

Of the 456 Marrakech experiences in our catalogue, 24 are described as private and the rest are shared or small-group formats. 34 are multi-day or overnight programmes, 12 mention lunch and 54 mention dinner in their title or duration. 385 can be booked and paid online straight away; the others start with a request and an exact quote. A shared tour is the most economical way to go and a good way to meet other travellers; a private tour costs more but lets you set the pace, stop where you like and travel only with your own group. Whichever you choose, compare three things on the tour page before booking: what is included (transfers, meals, activities, entry fees), the total duration including the drive, and the cancellation terms. If two tours look alike, the one with more ratings on booking partner platforms has simply been taken by more travellers — it is not a ranking of quality by us.

Prices

Our catalogue currently lists 456 experiences for Marrakech. Listed starting prices run from €6.60 to €1375.00, and half of them start below €46.55. City entry tickets and guided medina walks are at the lower end; private guides, hammam packages and balloon flights cost more. Every price on our site is shown in euros and is calculated on our server; the total you see before paying — for your date, option and number of adults and children — is the amount PayPal charges. Children pay 90% of the adult price on per-person tours unless the tour states otherwise.

Practical tips

• Agree prices before accepting a service in the souks. • Dress modestly in the medina and at religious sites. • Non-Muslims cannot enter most mosques in Morocco, including the Koutoubia. Exceptions are the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca (guided tours) and the Tin Mal Mosque in the High Atlas. The Ben Youssef Madrasa in Marrakech, a former school, is open to all. • Carry some cash; small shops may not take cards. • Stay hydrated and use sun protection — UV levels are high from May to August. • Book popular entries such as the Majorelle Garden in advance at busy times.

How booking works with Amazouz Morocco Tours

Choose a tour, pick your date and tell us how many adults and children are travelling, with each child's age. Tours with instant booking show the full euro total and can be paid straight away by PayPal or card. Other tours start as a request: we confirm availability and send an exact euro quote, and you pay on your private booking page. Your booking is confirmed only after the payment has been verified — a WhatsApp chat or an enquiry does not confirm a booking on its own.
