How to plan an Ourika Valley day trip: the road to Setti Fatma, the waterfall hike, the best season, prices and honest tips.
The Ourika Valley is one of the most popular day trips from Marrakech, and for good reason: within about an hour and a half you swap the city for a rushing mountain river, green terraces, riverside cafés and Amazigh villages at the foot of the High Atlas. The road ends at Setti Fatma, the starting point of the walk to a chain of waterfalls. Ourika tours are among the most-reviewed in our catalogue.
What to expect
A typical Ourika day trip includes:
• The drive up the valley with stops at viewpoints and villages.
• A visit to a traditional Berber house and often an argan oil cooperative.
• Time at Setti Fatma, the last village on the paved road, at roughly 1,500 m altitude.
• A guided walk to the waterfalls. The first waterfall is an easy walk of about 20–40 minutes; the higher falls involve a steep, rocky and slippery scramble, about 2–4 hours round trip depending on how far you go.
• Lunch, frequently tagine at a café terrace by the river.
Some tours add a camel ride or a longer hike; check the inclusions on each tour page.
Best time to visit
Marrakech has a hot semi-arid climate. Average daytime highs are about 18–22 °C from November to March, 24–27 °C in April and May, and 36 °C in July and August, with almost no rain from June to September. Most rain falls between October and April, on about five or six days a month. UV levels reach 10–11 from May to August. The valley is cooler than Marrakech, so it is a good escape in summer. Spring (March–May) brings the fullest waterfalls from snowmelt. Avoid the waterfall trail during or after heavy rain: the valley has a risk of flash floods, and tours may change the route on such days.
How to get there
The valley begins about 35 km from Marrakech near the market town of Tnine Ourika and follows the river up to Setti Fatma, about 60–65 km from the city — usually 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 by road. Shared grand taxis run towards the valley and are cheap but cramped; a tour with a return transfer is the simplest option. A weekly Monday souk is held at Tnine Ourika.
Ourika or the Atlas villages?
Ourika is the classic choice for water, riverside lunches and an easy-to-moderate walk. If you prefer quieter villages and more hiking, compare it with the Imlil day hikes in our Atlas Mountains & Imlil guide. Ourika is also the easier option for families and for travellers with limited time: the road is shorter, the walk to the first waterfalls can be kept short, and riverside cafés make it easy to rest along the way.
Who it suits
Ourika suits first-time visitors who want an easy day in the mountains, families (the first waterfall is a short walk), and travellers looking for a riverside lunch away from the city heat. The upper waterfalls suit people who are steady on their feet and happy to scramble over wet rocks. If you want quiet paths and fewer visitors, a guided hike around Imlil may suit you better; if you want the biggest waterfalls in Morocco, choose Ouzoud.
Choosing the right tour
Of the 152 Ourika Valley experiences in our catalogue, 17 are described as private and the rest are shared or small-group formats. 4 are multi-day or overnight programmes, 77 mention lunch and 15 mention dinner in their title or duration. 130 can be booked and paid online straight away; the others start with a request and an exact quote. A shared tour is the most economical way to go and a good way to meet other travellers; a private tour costs more but lets you set the pace, stop where you like and travel only with your own group. Whichever you choose, compare three things on the tour page before booking: what is included (transfers, meals, activities, entry fees), the total duration including the drive, and the cancellation terms. If two tours look alike, the one with more ratings on booking partner platforms has simply been taken by more travellers — it is not a ranking of quality by us.
Prices
Our catalogue currently lists 152 experiences for the Ourika Valley. Listed starting prices run from €5.81 to €248.83, and half of them start below €20.64. Shared day trips with lunch are the most affordable; private tours and longer guided hikes cost more. Every price on our site is shown in euros and is calculated on our server; the total you see before paying — for your date, option and number of adults and children — is the amount PayPal charges. Children pay 90% of the adult price on per-person tours unless the tour states otherwise.

Practical tips
• Wear sturdy trainers or walking shoes — sandals cause most of the slips on the waterfall path.
• If you go beyond the first waterfall, follow your guide; the rocks are slippery when wet.
• Bring a light jacket: the valley is noticeably cooler than Marrakech.
• Expect to be offered extras such as local guides or photos; agree any price before you accept.
• Carry a little cash for drinks or cooperative purchases.

How booking works with Amazouz Morocco Tours
Choose a tour, pick your date and tell us how many adults and children are travelling, with each child's age. Tours with instant booking show the full euro total and can be paid straight away by PayPal or card.
