Plan a trip over the High Atlas to the earthen ksar of Aït Ben Haddou and the film city of Ouarzazate: the route, timings, seasons and tours.
Aït Ben Haddou is a ksar — a group of earthen buildings crowded together inside high defensive walls with corner towers — and a striking example of the architecture of southern Morocco. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987. Reaching it from Marrakech means crossing the High Atlas by Tizi n'Tichka, the highest major mountain pass in North Africa, which makes the journey itself part of the experience.
What to expect
A day trip typically includes:
• An early start from Marrakech and the climb over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, with photo stops among walnut groves and mountain villages.
• A guided visit to the Ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, walking up through the lanes to the top for views over the valley.
• Lunch near the ksar or in Ouarzazate.
• In some tours, a visit to Ouarzazate and its film studios — entry is not included: about 100 MAD per person, paid on site.
• The drive back over the pass in the evening.
Some tours take the scenic route via the Glaoui kasbah at Telouet and the Ounila valley.
Best time to visit
Marrakech has a hot semi-arid climate. Average daytime highs are about 18–22 °C from November to March, 24–27 °C in April and May, and 36 °C in July and August, with almost no rain from June to September. Most rain falls between October and April, on about five or six days a month. UV levels reach 10–11 from May to August. On the pass itself, snow can fall from November to March, and the authorities occasionally close the road when it is too dangerous; tours may adjust the date in that case. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for the long drive and the walk up the ksar.
How to get there
The route follows National Route 9 over Tizi n'Tichka. The pass was long thought to be 2,260 m high (the sign at the top still says so), but GPS measurements put it at about 2,205 m. The drive from Marrakech to Ouarzazate is long and winding — about 3h30–4h each way — which is why most travellers either join a full-day tour or stay overnight on a 2-day trip towards the desert.
Day trip or overnight?
A day trip is a long but rewarding day with many hours in the vehicle. If you want more time at the ksar, or plan to continue to the Sahara, choose a 2- or 3-day tour that passes through Aït Ben Haddou on the way.
Who it suits
This trip suits travellers interested in architecture, history and film locations, and anyone who enjoys mountain roads and dramatic scenery. Because it involves about 7–8 hours of driving in one day, it is less suited to young children or people prone to car sickness; the road over the pass has many hairpin bends, and a stop or two on the way helps; for them, a 2-day tour that breaks the journey is more comfortable. The climb up the ksar has uneven steps, so allow time if you walk slowly.
Choosing the right tour
Of the 102 Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate experiences in our catalogue, 13 are described as private and the rest are shared or small-group formats. 43 are multi-day or overnight programmes, 2 mention lunch and 1 mention dinner in their title or duration. 74 can be booked and paid online straight away; the others start with a request and an exact quote. A shared tour is the most economical way to go and a good way to meet other travellers; a private tour costs more but lets you set the pace, stop where you like and travel only with your own group. Whichever you choose, compare three things on the tour page before booking: what is included (transfers, meals, activities, entry fees), the total duration including the drive, and the cancellation terms. If two tours look alike, the one with more ratings on booking partner platforms has simply been taken by more travellers — it is not a ranking of quality by us.
Prices
Our catalogue currently lists 102 experiences for Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate. Listed starting prices run from €9.44 to €2200.00, and half of them start below €103.68. Shared day trips are the most affordable; private day trips and multi-day routes with nights in the south cost more. Every price on our site is shown in euros and is calculated on our server; the total you see before paying — for your date, option and number of adults and children — is the amount PayPal charges. Children pay 90% of the adult price on per-person tours unless the tour states otherwise.

• Carry cash for entry fees or extras not listed as included.
• If you get car sick, take a remedy before the mountain bends.
