Toubkal 3 day trek: a relaxed 3 day itinerary from Imlil with an extra night, slower ascent and more time to adjust to altitude.

By Amazouz Morocco Tours team, local guides based in Marrakech and the High Atlas

One extra day changes everything: better sleep, easier breathing and a summit you'll actually enjoy. That is why we often recommend the Toubkal 3 day trek to first-time trekkers who have the time.

The classic two-day ascent works, but it is rushed. Adding a day spreads the walking, gives your body more time at altitude before the summit push and leaves room for the weather. This article walks you through a typical three-day itinerary and helps you decide if it suits you.

Programmes vary. Some of our three-day trips spend the first night in a village guesthouse, others add an acclimatisation day at the refuge, and some return by a different valley [TO CHECK: confirm the exact night locations for each 3-day programme we sell]. The structure below is the most common.

Why a slow ascent helps

Your body adjusts to altitude gradually. Climbing from about 1,740 metres in Imlil to 4,167 metres in little more than a day leaves almost no time for that. A toubkal slow ascent with an extra night gives you:

- **Shorter walking days.** Less exhaustion before summit day. - **More sleep.** The single biggest boost to summit morning. - **Time to notice symptoms early.** And for your guide to adjust the plan. - **A weather buffer.** On some programmes, an extra day gives flexibility if the summit morning brings bad weather.

An extra day does not guarantee the summit or prevent altitude sickness. If you have any heart, lung or blood-pressure condition, are pregnant, or take regular medication, ask your doctor before booking a trek to 4,167 metres.

Day 1: Marrakech to Imlil and the first walk

Pickup in Marrakech in the morning, then the drive of about 65 km (about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes) to Imlil. You meet your guide and team, load the mules and start walking.

On a relaxed toubkal trek, the first day is gentle. You may walk through villages and terraced fields, take a long lunch and finish at a guesthouse or continue part-way up the valley. The goal is to arrive fresh, not tired.

Evening: a warm dinner, mint tea and an early night.

Day 2: up to the refuge

This is the long climbing day. You follow the valley past Aroumd and the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch, then climb steadily to the refuges below the summit. Because you are fresher than on a two-day trip, the climb feels more manageable.

At the refuge, change into dry clothes, drink, eat and rest. On some three-day trips with an acclimatisation day, your guide may take you on a short walk higher up in the afternoon and back down to sleep. Climbing a little higher and sleeping lower is a well-known way to help your body adjust [TO CHECK: whether our guides include this walk].

Day 3: summit and descent

### Before dawn

An early wake-up, a light breakfast and headlamps on. Warm layers, gloves and a hat are essential.

### Refuge to summit

The steep part: scree and rocky ground above the refuge. In summer conditions it is a steep walk; in winter you need crampons and an ice axe. Walk slowly and steadily.

### The summit

At 4,167 metres you reach the highest point in North Africa. The extra day often pays off here: guests on three-day trips usually have more energy to enjoy the view.

### The long descent

Back down to the refuge, then down the valley to Imlil and the drive to Marrakech in the evening.

Toubkal trek 2 nights: two common versions

| Version | Night 1 | Night 2 | Best for | |---|---|---|---| | Valley start | Village guesthouse | Refuge | Gentle start, cultural feel | | Refuge acclimatisation | Refuge | Refuge | More time at altitude before the summit |

[TO CHECK: confirm which version each of our 3-day treks uses.]

Is the extra day worth it?

Choose the 3-day itinerary if:

- This is your first mountain over 3,000 metres. - You want to enjoy the trek, not just survive it. - You are travelling with family, older hikers or mixed fitness levels. - You have one more day in your holiday.

Choose the [2-day itinerary](/blog/toubkal-2-day-trek-itinerary) if you are fit, used to long hill days and short on time.

What to bring

The same as for any Toubkal trek: good boots, warm layers, a sleeping bag or liner if needed, sun protection, a headlamp and snacks. Our sister site [Toubkal Views](https://toubkalviews.com) has full packing and gear-rental guides, so we do not repeat them here.

Prices and booking

Our current 3-day Toubkal climbing treks start from **€206.33 per person**. Each tour page lists what is included, where you sleep and any extras. All our Toubkal treks have free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start (Morocco time), with a full refund.

Tips for three days in the mountains

- **Use the first day to settle.** Do not rush. - **Bring something to read or a deck of cards** for refuge evenings. - **Keep a small bag of warm clothes** for the nights. - **Tell your guide early** if you have a headache or feel unwell.

What the extra day feels like

Guests who do the three-day version often describe the trek differently from two-day trekkers. Instead of a race up and down, they talk about the walk itself: the villages, the walnut trees, the mule trains, the light on the ridges in the evening and the conversations at the refuge.

On the second evening you have usually had time to adjust a little. You eat better, you sleep a bit better, and summit morning starts with more energy. That does not make the climb easy, but it often makes it enjoyable.

Who we recommend the 3-day trek for

- **First-time high-altitude trekkers.** Anyone who has never been above 3,000 metres. - **Families and teenagers.** Shorter days suit mixed groups. - **Older hikers.** A gentler rhythm is easier on joints and recovery. - **Photographers.** More time in good light, at sunset and sunrise. - **Anyone who wants to enjoy it.** If the summit is the goal and the journey matters too, this is the version.

What to expect at the refuge for two nights

Refuges are simple mountain buildings with shared dormitories, a dining room and basic washing facilities. They can be busy in peak season and cold at night. Bring warm clothes for the evenings, earplugs and a small bag with your essentials so you are not searching your main bag in the dark. Facilities change over time, so check the tour page for what is provided on your trip [TO CHECK: current refuge facilities and whether bedding is supplied].

Combining with other trips

Because you return to Marrakech on the evening of the third day, many guests book a rest day afterwards, or continue to the desert or the coast. Plan at least one easy day before any long road trip so your legs can recover.
