Choosing desert tours from Marrakech starts with a simple question: how much of your holiday do you want to spend on the road? Agafay gives you a desert evening close to the city. Zagora fits a two-day escape with a camp night. Merzouga needs at least three days for the big Erg Chebbi dunes. Those are different experiences, not interchangeable versions of the same excursion.

How far is the desert from Marrakech?

Agafay is roughly 30–40 km from Marrakech, usually around 40–60 minutes each way depending on pickup and the camp. You stay on the same side of the High Atlas as the city. There are no Sahara sand dunes here: the landscape is rocky hills, dry ground and open horizons.

Zagora is about 350–360 km away by road. Allow roughly 6–7 hours of driving each way before substantial sightseeing stops. A two-day tour therefore contains two long travel days. The road crosses the High Atlas and continues through southern Morocco towards the Draa Valley; this journey is a major part of the experience.

Merzouga is approximately 560 km from Marrakech by road. Direct travel can take about 9–10 hours, and sightseeing adds time. Three-day itineraries normally split the outward journey over two days, then make a long return on day three. Do not interpret “three days” as three days spent in the dunes.

Agafay: a desert evening without the Sahara drive

Agafay suits travellers who have only an afternoon or evening, prefer to sleep in their Marrakech accommodation, or want a first taste of open desert scenery. Expect stony plateaus and pale, rolling hills rather than dunes. Clear conditions can reveal mountain views, but visibility depends on weather. Sunset changes the colour of the ground without changing its geology.

Our selected Agafay quad, camel and dinner-show experience starts from €25 per person. Its listed inclusions are roundtrip transport from designated pickup points, a 40-minute ride on a shared double quad, a 15-minute camel ride, dinner with water and an evening show. Two people share a quad; a solo machine is not implied by the starting price. Read the pickup instructions rather than assuming a vehicle can reach every medina riad.

The advantage is simple: you spend much less time travelling and can combine several activities in one outing. The compromise is that a dinner-show camp can be lively, with music, groups and scheduled entertainment. It is not the right choice if your priority is remote silence or walking across a vast dune sea. An evening dinner does not include overnight accommodation.

Spring and autumn are comfortable choices for outdoor activities. Summer evenings avoid some midday heat, but the ground can still be hot. Winter evenings require warm layers. Book around the experience you want, not an assumed year-round sunset time. Read more in our Agafay destination guide and Is Agafay a real desert?.

Zagora: a camp night when you have two days

Choose Zagora when you have two full days and want the mountain road, southern valleys and an overnight camp without travelling all the way to Merzouga. The route matters as much as the camp: our recommended tour combines the High Atlas crossing with Aït Ben Haddou before continuing south. You get changing landscapes rather than a single desert stop.

The Zagora area has smaller dune landscapes and sandy patches, not the towering Erg Chebbi dunes shown in many Sahara photographs. Exact scenery depends on the camp location. Zagora is a town and departure area, not one enormous continuous dune field; asking where the camp sits is more useful than relying on the destination name alone.

Our two-day Sahara tour to Zagora and Aït Ben Haddou starts from €90 per person for the priced shared-tour option. It includes return transport, one night in a standard camp, dinner and breakfast, shower and toilet access, a sunset camel ride to camp and a sunrise ride back. Shared facilities should not be mistaken for an ensuite tent. Other options need their own price and inclusion checks.

The main disadvantage is the amount of driving squeezed into two days. If winding mountain roads make you uncomfortable or you want a relaxed trip with young children, weigh that carefully. Spring and autumn are generally preferable to peak summer heat. Winter can be suitable with warm night clothing, but the mountain crossing still needs weather awareness. Read more in our Zagora tour comparison.

Merzouga: the high Erg Chebbi dunes

Merzouga is the strongest match when your priority is a real Sahara dune landscape and you can allow at least three days. Erg Chebbi has high sand dunes beside the village area. The attraction is the scale of the sand, the changing light and the contrast with the mountains and valleys you cross to reach it—not simply a longer version of Agafay.

Our selected three-day luxury Merzouga tour is listed from €264 per person. The route includes a first night in a hotel or kasbah in the Dades Valley and a second night in a Merzouga luxury camp with a private tent and private bathroom. It lists sunset and sunrise camel rides, two breakfasts and two dinners. Check the exact option at booking, because the option—not the word “luxury” alone—defines what you receive.

The final-day drive is about 9–10 hours with stops on this confirmed itinerary. Leave room in your plans rather than booking a tight onward connection. Spring and autumn usually offer a better balance of daytime comfort and cooler nights. Summer heat and winter cold nights deserve preparation; comfortable daytime weather does not mean a warm tent after dark. Read more in our Merzouga and Sahara destination guide and Merzouga tour comparison.

Erg Chigaga: a real alternative, with more logistics

We also list a private three-day Sahara trip to Erg Chigaga, so it belongs in this comparison—but not as an interchangeable instant-booking offer. Its programme includes Aït Ben Haddou, Tinfou, Tamegroute, a first camp night in the Zagora area and a second at Erg Chigaga. A 4WD desert ride is listed among its inclusions.

Chigaga suits travellers specifically seeking a farther-reaching dune journey and willing to handle additional off-road travel. The advantage is a different desert route; the disadvantage is a more involved itinerary, with comfort and timings depending on the vehicle, route and camp. Three days is the minimum for this listed programme, not a claim that three days will feel leisurely.

The private offer is currently request-only. We do not quote its indicative catalogue price as a confirmed payable starting price: ask for availability and an exact quote first. Its listed accommodation is a luxury camp in the Zagora area and a standard camp at Chigaga, so do not assume identical facilities on both nights. Spring and autumn are sensible starting points when planning; ask about conditions for your date before committing. Read more in our other Sahara programmes comparison.

Which one should I choose?

For a 1 day vs 2 day vs 3 day desert tour comparison, match the trip to your time and tolerance for driving before comparing activities. If you only have one evening, choose Agafay. You can enjoy rocky scenery, a short camel ride and dinner, then return to Marrakech. Do not book it expecting Sahara dunes.

With two full days, Zagora is a practical camp-night option, provided two substantial travel days are acceptable. If the dream is high dunes, it is better to rearrange your itinerary for Merzouga than to book Zagora expecting the same landscape. With three days, Merzouga is the clearer fit for Erg Chebbi; more time would make any long-distance desert journey less rushed.

When deciding Agafay or Merzouga, ask whether convenience or dunes matter more. When deciding Zagora or Merzouga, ask whether you can add the third day and accept the long return. Erg Chigaga belongs on the shortlist when you actively want its route and off-road stage, rather than simply searching for the cheapest camp night.

What to pack

Pack light enough to move a small bag comfortably. For a multi-day trip, ask where your main luggage stays and whether the camp transfer has a separate baggage arrangement. The selected tour’s instructions take priority over generic packing advice. Keep medication, valuables and overnight essentials with you, not buried in a suitcase you cannot reach.

Bring loose clothing for the daytime, sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat. Closed shoes are useful on rocky ground and for moving around camps; sandals alone are a poor choice for every activity. Add warm layers for the evening, with more insulation in winter. A light scarf can help with sun or wind, but it is not protection against every weather condition.

Carry drinking water, a reusable bottle, any regular medication, a charged phone, a power bank and a small torch. Take cash for extras specifically excluded by your tour, rather than expecting card payment at every stop. Lunches, drinks, guides or visits may have separate costs depending on the programme. If you need dietary adjustments, request them before departure and confirm what can actually be provided.

What to expect in a desert camp

“Desert camp” covers very different accommodation. Some tents have private bathrooms; others share toilet and shower facilities. A private sleeping tent does not automatically mean a private bathroom. Our selected luxury Merzouga programme explicitly includes both; the selected standard Zagora programme promises access to showers and toilets without promising ensuite facilities.

Do not assume dependable Wi-Fi, air conditioning, constant electricity or a guaranteed clear night sky. Charging arrangements and mobile reception vary, and wind or clouds can change the atmosphere completely. Camel rides can be uncomfortable for some travellers, so tell the team about concerns before booking. Keep expectations tied to the selected option and treat good sunset conditions as a welcome extra, not a contractual promise.

Frequently asked questions

Which desert is closest to Marrakech?
Agafay is closest: roughly 30–40 km away, usually about 40–60 minutes each way depending on pickup and camp. It is rocky desert, not Sahara dunes.
Agafay or Merzouga: which should I choose?
Choose Agafay for an evening close to Marrakech. Choose Merzouga for the high Erg Chebbi sand dunes if you have at least three days and accept long road journeys.
Zagora or Merzouga: are the dunes the same?
No. Zagora-area camps have smaller dune landscapes depending on location. Merzouga is beside the high Erg Chebbi dunes. Choose Zagora for two days, Merzouga for three or more.
Can I visit the Sahara from Marrakech in one day?
A same-day return is not a practical choice for the long drive to Zagora or Merzouga. Choose Agafay for an evening, while remembering it is not the Sahara.
Does a three-day Merzouga tour mean two nights in a desert camp?
Not on our selected luxury route. It includes one night in a hotel or kasbah in the Dades Valley and one night in a Merzouga camp with a private tent and bathroom.
How much do the recommended desert tours cost?
Checked on 12 October 2026: selected Agafay from €25, Zagora from €90 and luxury Merzouga from €264 per person. Erg Chigaga requires an exact quote. Check the final option and date total before paying.
